NASA's ESCAPADE Mission Captures Stunning Earth-Moon Portrait

Mission Details
- The mission is part of NASA’s SIMPLEx program, which caps mission costs at $55 million.
- Managed by UC Berkeley’s Space Sciences Laboratory, the mission launched on a Blue Origin New Glenn rocket on November 13, 2025.
- The twin spacecraft were manufactured by Rocket Lab and are currently following a kidney-shaped orbit around the L2 point.
Image Analysis
- The images were taken on July 3 from 1.5 million kilometers away.
- Both Earth and the Moon appear as 8% sunlit crescents.
- The Moon (186,100 km away) appears similar in size to Earth (584,600 km away) because it is much closer to the camera.
- Earth exhibits 30% reflectivity due to cloud cover, while the Moon has a 7% albedo, comparable to worn asphalt.
- Infrared readings show Earth's night-side glowing at -10 to -44°F, while the Moon's night-side is a frigid -280°F.
Scientific Objectives
- The primary goal is to study the Martian magnetosphere and how solar wind strips the planet's atmosphere.
- The L2 staging allows the mission to launch outside of restricted 26-month Mars transfer windows.
- On-board cameras will eventually hunt for Martian auroras and analyze the thermal characteristics of the Martian surface and atmosphere.
