The Legacy of Lorenzo Dinno Bilag: A Traditional Healer in the Cordillera Mountains
At 88, Lorenzo Dinno ‘Apo Bukat’ Bilag has spent over two decades serving remote mountain communities in Mankayan, Benguet, as a traditional healer. He treats physical ailments—ranging from stiff muscles to dislocated joints—using warm herbal liniment and somatic manipulation without diagnostic machinery. His practice emphasizes human connection and empathy, operating without fixed fees and extending his care to manual support for elderly residents. Methodology and Philosophy Bukat approaches the body as holding a memory of injury; his treatment focuses on gently guiding tissues back to rest rather than forcing physical alignment. His work spans generations, having previously served as a midwife for over 30 deliveries and now treating diverse community members, including agrarian workers and public officials. Notable Recovery Case A long-term project involved a paralyzed patient from Buguias who was bedridden and unable to move. Over three months of daily treatment, Bukat employed a systematic approach—focusing on blood flow, nerve unblocking, and muscle memory reconstruction—which ultimately restored the patient’s ability to walk independently. Fieldwork Documentation The information is based on two months of ethnographic research (August–September 2026) in Ampontoc, Colalo.
