Mercury Detected in Imported Pakistani Whitening Cream
Pressenza
- The EcoWaste Coalition has issued a warning regarding 'Yaz Beauty Cream Herbal + Natural White,' a Pakistani skin-lightening product found to contain dangerously high levels of mercury.
- Testing revealed 16,380 ppm of mercury, far exceeding the 1 ppm limit set by the ASEAN Cosmetic Directive and the Minamata Convention.
Product Testing and Findings
- This discovery marks the 48th mercury-tainted skin-lightening product from Pakistan identified by the group using X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF) screening.
- Other Yaz products, including 'Yaz Beauty Cream Double White + Vitamin C' and 'Yaz Gold Beauty Cream Active White + 24K Gold Dust,' were previously found to contain even higher mercury concentrations.
- The organization has notified the Philippine Food and Drug Administration (FDA) of its findings.
Consumer Safety Recommendations
- Reject chemical whiteners and embrace natural skin tones to combat colorism.
- Exercise caution with online purchases; verify products via the official FDA portal before buying.
- Avoid products with poor labeling or unrealistic claims.
- Seek immediate medical consultation if skin rashes, discoloration, or other adverse symptoms occur after using unknown cosmetic products.
