Astronomers Confirm Discovery of Milky Way's Most Powerful Particle Accelerator
Astronomers have confirmed the identity of a 'PeVatron'—a natural particle accelerator in the Milky Way capable of accelerating protons to peta-electronvolt (PeV) energies, roughly 1,000 times higher than the Large Hadron Collider.
The object, designated LHAASO J1912+1014u, is located near the star Altair and represents a rare discovery of a galactic source capable of such extreme cosmic ray production.
Scientific Methodology
Initial detection was made in 2024 by observatories in China and Tibet, which identified high-energy gamma rays.
Gamma rays at these levels can be produced by either accelerated protons or fast-moving electrons, making it difficult to confirm the source using a single instrument.
A team led by Tsunefumi Mizuno of Hiroshima University integrated data from three distinct sources to distinguish the source:
The combined data confirmed that gamma-ray emissions aligned precisely with the location of interstellar gas, indicating protons colliding with gas clouds.
The energy range of the emissions effectively ruled out electron-based origins.
The relative lack of diffuse X-ray emission further supported the conclusion that LHAASO J1912+1014u is a genuine proton accelerator.
Implications
This research establishes a successful multi-instrument methodology for analyzing other PeVatron candidates within the Galaxy.
