NASA Curiosity Rover Climbs One Kilometer Above Gale Crater Floor
NASA
- Curiosity achieved a milestone by reaching 1 kilometer of elevation above the Gale Crater floor.
- The rover captured a panoramic view of the crater while continuing its ascent of Mount Sharp.
Mission Milestones
- On Aug. 26, 2026 (Sol 4,996), the rover officially reached the 1-kilometer elevation mark.
- Since 2014, the rover has been navigating the lower foothills of Mount Sharp, which stands 5 kilometers (3 miles) tall.
Panoramic Photography
- The newly released image, captured on Sept. 5, 2026 (Sol 5,006), is a composite of 95 images taken by the Mast Camera (Mastcam).
- The panorama shows the Gale Crater floor, the distant crater rim, and a sand ridge in the foreground.
- A visible trench created by the rover's right front wheel is included in the frame.
- Researchers will analyze the ridge’s geologic layering and sand composition to determine its formation history.
Mission Operations
- The Mastcam instrument was developed and is operated by Malin Space Science Systems in San Diego.
- NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), managed by Caltech, oversees the mission for the Science Mission Directorate under the Mars Exploration Program.
