Wavy Structures Discovered in Jupiter's Magnetodisk

NASA's Juno probe has identified a complex, rippling wave-like structure within Jupiter's magnetodisk, challenging the long-standing model of a smooth, rotating disk. Researchers from Shandong University found that the magnetodisk contains numerous small-scale magnetic reconnection sites that displace the current sheet, creating ripples that rotate with the planet. This discovery, published in Science China Earth Sciences, provides new insight into how Jupiter interacts with its ionosphere and manages the transport of volcanic material from the moon Io.

Reevaluating the Hypernova Hypothesis

New research from University College London challenges the existence of hypernovae, which were previously hypothesized as the most energetic explosions in the universe. By utilizing models that account for the "inhomogeneous mixing" of stellar ejecta, researchers demonstrated that the chemical signatures of metal-poor stars—once considered evidence of hypernovae—are consistent with a combination of standard supernovae and neutron star mergers. This shift in understanding suggests that localized mixing in space plays a much larger role in chemical evolution than previously assumed.

Leadership Transitions at NASA

NASA has appointed veteran astronaut Christina Koch as the agency's acting deputy chief engineer, succeeding the retiring Katherine Van Hooser, who served for 35 years. Koch, who set the record for the longest single spaceflight by a woman and served on the Artemis II lunar mission, will shift to management status to oversee technical readiness for upcoming lunar and Mars objectives.

The Shift Toward Autonomous Digital Infrastructure

The newly formed 'Rise Against Big Tech' (RABT) coalition has launched to assist organizations in migrating from corporate platforms to community-controlled digital tools. Driven by the 'Cutting the Cord' study, which identified technical complexity as a primary barrier to leaving major tech services, the coalition is providing forums, workshops, and strategic support to help non-profits build more resilient, anti-surveillance infrastructure for their activism.
