Graphic Novel Reclaims the Contributions of Forgotten Women in History

• The graphic novel 'Las grandes olvidadas' (The Great Forgotten Women), created by journalist Titiou Lecoq and illustrator Marie Dubois, explores the lives of women who were influential but ignored by historical records.
• It highlights figures such as Enheduanna, the Mesopotamian priestess and poet from the 23rd century BCE, often cited as the first known author in history.

Purpose and Approach

• The graphic novel adapts Lecoq's 2021 essay, which was inspired by historian Michelle Perrot’s academic work on women's history.
• The authors aim to "complete" history rather than rewrite it, illustrating that women have always been active participants in revolutions, scientific discoveries, and cultural movements.
• Using a pedagogical and humorous tone, the book seeks to make these historical facts accessible to a younger audience.

Impact and Implications

• The work challenges the notion that masculinity is the default universal, arguing that this perspective is unsustainable.
• Dubois emphasizes the importance of preserving women's history as a bulwark against the current regression of rights in countries like the United States, Italy, and France.
• The illustrator suggests that if these women's stories had been widely known, society would be more egalitarian, as young people would have more diverse models of capability and cooperation.
• The authors posit that a future where women's perspectives—valuing care, long-term thinking, and sensitivity—are integrated into leadership could provide vital solutions for today's economic and ecological crises.
