- NASA’s Student Airborne Research Program (SARP) concluded its eight-week summer session on July 27.
- 48 undergraduate students participated in hands-on field research across four disciplines: atmospheric science, oceans, terrestrial ecology, and hydrology.
- The program provides students with experience in data collection, analysis, and research while working alongside scientists and faculty.
Field Research Highlights
- Students conducted atmospheric research in Texas, including the deployment of "ozonesondes"—balloons designed to measure ozone concentrations as they ascend.
- Participants were guided by professional scientists, university professors, and graduate mentors.
- Research involved using specialized instruments, such as lasers for atmospheric particulate collection, and cross-checking field data with NASA satellite observations.
Infrastructure and Operations
- Research activities were supported by five science aircraft:
- NASA’s Gulfstream G-III, GV, and C-20A
- Dynamic Aviation’s B200
- A P-III aircraft from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA)
- After the initial two weeks in Houston, the cohort split into two groups to continue research in California and Virginia.
Educational Impact
- The program aims to bridge the gap between classroom learning and professional STEM careers.
- Students designed independent research projects and presented their findings at the end of the term.
- Program managers emphasized the focus on building the next generation of Earth system scientists by exposing them to diverse career paths and practical, field-based science.
